Causal Pluralism in Philosophy: Empirical Challenges and Alternative Proposals

چکیده

An increasing number of arguments for causal pluralism invoke empirical psychological data. Different aspects cognition—specifically, perception and inference—are thought to involve distinct cognitive processes representations, they thereby distinctively support transference dependency theories causation, respectively. We argue that this dualistic picture concepts arises from methodological differences, rather than an actual plurality concepts. Hence, philosophical is not particularly supported by the Serious engagement with science reveals connection between causation notions substantially more complicated traditionally presumed.

Causal Pluralism and Force Dynamics

Causal relations permeate human knowledge across a wide range of domains, from the physical to the abstract. The existence of causal relations in many different domains raises an interesting challenge for accounts of causation. On the one hand, the word cause, and related words, can be used to describe a very wide range of situations, consistent with the possibility that people’s representation...

Disentangling Causal Pluralism∗

Causal pluralism is increasingly gaining interest as a promising alternative for monistic approaches toward causation. However, although the debate is scarcely out of the egg, the term “causal pluralism” already covers diverse meanings. This creates confusion, and to remedy that confusion, it is necessary to discern different kinds of pluralistic approaches to causation and different possible p...

Physicalism, Pluralism and Causal Completeness: On the Metaphysical Foundations for Philosophy of Mind

The so-called Exclusion argument (Kim 2000; Papineau 2004) about mental causation applies one premise that is typically accepted without much discussion: the thesis of causal completeness of the physical domain (CCP). In part one I evaluate Papineau’s (2001) argument for the CCP. I argue that this argument is not satisfying and that it is incomplete. The rest of the thesis is dedicated to an al...

Causal Pluralism versus Epistemic Causality

It is tempting to analyse causality in terms of just one of the indicators of causal relationships, e.g., mechanisms, probabilistic dependencies or independencies, counterfactual conditionals or agency considerations. While such an analysis will surely shed light on some aspect of our concept of cause, it will fail to capture the whole, rather multifarious, notion. So one might instead plump fo...

Two Proposals for Causal Grammars

In the previous chapter (Tenenbaum, Griffiths, & Niyogi, this volume), we introduced a framework for thinking about the structure, function, and acquisition of intuitive theories inspired by an analogy to the research program of generative grammar in linguistics. We argued that a principal function for intuitive theories, just as for grammars for natural languages, is to generate a constrained ...
